Helen Shay : Writer

Helen Shay is a dramatist, based in the North of England, and also a spoken word performer. Other hats include wife, mother, part-time lawyer, poet and non-fiction writer. She currently works at the University of York, where she is teaching play-writing in 2010.

Her plays have been performed at Edinburgh Fringe, Ilkley Literature Festival, Harrogate Theatre and other UK regional venues. She has worked on projects with West Yorkshire Playhouse and Theatre in the Mill. Her radio plays have been broadcast by bcb radio, Bradford. In 2004, she won first prize in the radio play competition by the International Playwrights Forum of International Theatre Institute.  (Play published and translated.) 

She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Manchester Metropolitan University (Distinction awarded), tutors being Michael Schmidt of Carcanet Press and novelists, Heather Beck and Paul Magr.  Helen has also performed poetry, including at Glastonbury Festival.

Helen attended 8th IWPC in Mumbai in Nov 09, reading an abridged version of Malteser Falcon. The revised play ‘About Chocolate’ will be performed at Edinburgh Fringe 2010.

Helen is currently serving on Authors North committee of Society of Authors and as UK rep for IWPC, plus is an ‘ambassador’ of SWWJ and  branch co-ordinator for Script Yorkshire.

She is author of Writer’s Guide to Copyright, Contract and Law (now in 4th ed ISBN 9781845283216).
